Mascara for Sensitive Eyes Buyer’s Guide
There are a few dos and don’ts when looking for mascaras that won’t harm your eyes. But before you get too in-depth with chemicals and toxins, make sure you are first of all looking at the texture of your product. Sure, fiber-enhanced formulas are brilliant at extending your lashes for a dramatic eye, and tubing products are so useful for waterproofing, but these are two mechanical irritants that, when they flake off, can get trapped in the eye or behind your contact lens. Ouch.
Talking of ‘mechanical’ abrasions, check to see how you remove the mascara. Does it dissolve simply in warm water and soap, or will you be aggressively scrubbing at your poor face for ages? Repetitive dragging of the skin around the eye is not only going to make them instantly sore but can also speed up the aging process, so treat your eyes gently!
If you have stubborn mascara, hold your cleanser on a cotton pad on your eye for a minute or so to allow it to work before carefully removing in soft strokes. This prevents eyelashes from falling out prematurely. Next, look for any mascaras which are hypoallergenic (to reduce the risk of a reaction occurring) and ophthalmologist-tested (to further reassure that the product has been tested explicitly around the eye area.)
The real key to protecting yourself is definitely to keep it simple! We’ve reviewed some great brands above with mascaras packed with natural waxes, plant-derived moisturizers, and little else (meaning no long list of unpronounceable chemicals). As the trend for Vegan living continues, natural products will be more available for everyone.
